VSEAT Case Study: Revolutionizing Bicycle Comfort

Have you ever thought you’d ride your bike more often if the seat were more comfortable? You’re not alone. Many cyclists share the frustration of chafing and saddle sores from prolonged rides. This was the case for fitness instructor Bryan and his client Ani, who, dismayed by the lack of comfortable bicycle seats, decided to create a solution. Together, they conceptualized, designed, developed, and patented the VSEAT®, an extraordinarily comfortable bicycle seat that can be used on any indoor and outdoor bicycle.

To bring their vision to life, they needed expert help. Ian Fettes, VSEAT‘s lead mechanical engineer, recommended Dinsmore for their prototyping needs. Ian had collaborated with Dinsmore on previous projects and knew their capabilities were a perfect match for the innovative VSEAT. Dinsmore assigned Nick Dario as their account manager, bringing his expertise and enthusiasm to the project. Ani described Nick as “welcoming and energetic,” noting how he guided them in selecting the best materials for their prototypes.

The initial prototypes utilized Polyjet technology, which prints multiple materials and colors, allowing Ani and Bryan to assess the ideal softness or firmness for the VSEAT. Nick elaborated, “We started with Polyjet using Agilus material, which offers a range of durometers from 30A to 95A. Ani and Bryan wanted to test different levels of softness or hardness. We also used FDM technology for the substrate where the VSEAT would be. Then, we transitioned to Castings for a short run with different colors and durometers. Finally, we used painted SLA parts for marketing and promotional materials.”

Dinsmore’s rapid prototyping capabilities allowed Ani and Bryan to save significant time and money. They received their first model just weeks after submitting their initial computer rendering. The robust prototypes enabled extensive field testing on stationary, road, and mountain bikes, covering hundreds of miles. This thorough testing ensured the VSEAT met the highest standards of comfort and durability.

The collaboration between Dinsmore and the VSEAT inventors has been a triumph, transforming their concept into a tangible, market-ready product. The VSEAT is currently in production, and Ani and Bryan hope its exceptional comfort will encourage more people to cycle, promoting a healthier and more active lifestyle.
